Creating the video

Writer's picture: Abigail HallAbigail Hall

After completing the analysis (which will be included in my accompanying essay), I decided it was time to begin editing the videos.

Each one was imported into iMovie (a trusty hard-drive to make up for the awful storage on my laptop), and one-by-one, I went through and found the selected clips from when I transcribed them. I was not aware I would have the privilege of interviewing so many people, so did not presume I would have to cut down around 7 hours of footage! My original aim of making a 5 minute video was now very unrealistic, so decided to aim for 20 minutes.

It took a while, not only to cut out the unusable sections such as myself asking the questions and the 'um's', but also the answers to the questions that were not as captivating or reflected the aims as well. At this stage, there was an hour of 'usable' footage, and the next stage was creating the structure, and choosing the best answers for each section.

I wanted the video structure to be as follows originally:

  1. Music Therapy history timeline with graphics

  2. I’ve been a music therapist for ….years Montage

  3. Music therapists specialities

  4. Examples of success stories

  5. Covid-19- how they had to adapt

  6. What music therapy means to them clips

  7. Credits

As stated previously, I changed the opening graphics to be more about why I decided to do this project. Also, I did not think it was particularly relevant to include how long each participant has been a therapist, so I omitted that, and included it in the analysis for the accompanying essay instead. The success stories themselves were beautiful, and it was so lovely to hear examples of how music therapy has helped some people. I wanted other people to hear about them too, but as the footage came to around 20 minutes, I decided I should dedicate a section of my website to them. I will write about this on another blog post.

Final structure:

  1. Video introduction with graphics- What is this video? Why did I make it?

  2. Music therapists specialities

  3. How sessions usually work

  4. Covid-19- how they had to adapt

  5. Why more people should utilise music therapy

  6. What music therapy means to them

  7. Credits

I have now completed the first draft which is around 20 minutes long, which I will send to the participants for approval.

To do:

  • Complete sections of website- add testimonies

  • Send draft to therapists

  • Contact someone to do sign language

  • Add music and subtitles
